The History of the House
The house that is now home to Sidwell Friends Bed and Breakfast was built in the 1920s for Dr. M.M. Lumbattis, a prominent Mount Vernon dentist. The classic colonial style, the craftsmanship, and the size and location of the house all give evidence to the success Dr. Lumbattis had achieved.
The house remained under the watchful care of the Lumbattis family until it was purchased by John and Mary Baggott in the mid 70's. The Baggotts initiated an ambitious effort to modernize the house (kitchen/baths), and they undertook extensive landscaping. The beautiful grounds remain as a testament to their efforts.
Mr. Sidwell purchased the house in 2003 with the intention of opening Mount Vernon's first B&B. Following his retirement from a career of college teaching in May of 2007, he began in earnest what came to be a year of serious remodeling and redecorating. The end product provides an elegant showcase for his collection of fine furniture, artwork, books, and accessories. And, he's excited that others are now able to enjoy the house, its furnishings, and the grounds.
